SHEPHERD SEEDS--a quick history.
Gene Shepherd has been involved in agriculture for over 5 decades. Reared on an Northern Illinois Grain & Livestock farm, attended Boone County Schools, a graduate of Southern Illinois University, comes from a family of agriculturists tracing ancestry to Europe and Great Britain and Native Americans. As the founder of Shepherd Seeds, after working in agricultural research in plant sciences, Gene Shepherd continues a tradition of family seedsmen since the onset of hybrid seed corn.
Where is SHEPHERD FARMS?located in two
states
and 3 counties, on the statelines of Wisconsin and Illinois, midway
between
Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. Shepherd Farms is priviledged
to till some of the worlds best soils. Blessed with temperate climate,
abundant resources, and amidst the US cornbelt, Shepherd Farms are
farmed
using the best soil and wter conservation methods, limiting pesticides
to only those necessary, and benefiting from recycling of organic and
inorganic
nutrients. Fish and wildlilfe are abundant and birds and waterfowl
visit
certain areas of the farms for nesting sites and during migrations.

What does Shepherd Farms grow and market?
Shepherd Seeds has grown farm seeds for the cornbelt farmer for over 40
years. In Dec. of 2010 Shepherd Seeds brands of Shepherd and Simons
were sold to Genesysgrain of Morrison, Il., owned by Rusty Packer and
family. Gene Shepherd and his sons Ryan and Colin will continue
to farm, grow crops and seeds for wholesale, broker sale, and under
contract production. Gene Shepherd will not sell retail farm
seeds under the Shepherd or the Simons brand. The seedfarm.com
website is still owned by the Shepherd family and will continure to
supply research needs as listed.
